Roll Down Shutters in Fort Myers, FL

In the newer communities east of I-75 the question is rarely whether a product is
strong enough. It is whether the committee will let you put it on the house.

The openings you cannot reach

Fort Myers has considerably more two-storey housing than the cities around it — the coach
homes, the newer builds east of I-75, and a good deal of the rental stock. That changes the
calculation, because the openings most worth protecting are frequently the ones nobody is going to
climb up to.

This is the argument for motorizing, and it is a behavioural one rather than a technical one. A
shutter that needs a ladder is a shutter that gets skipped on the day it matters, and the day it
matters is the day the wind is already up and the ladder is the worst idea in the house.

Every motorized roll down shutter we install has a manual
override, so you crank it down by hand if the power has already gone. The motor is convenience; the
protection does not depend on it.

Nothing on the wall

The second reason these sell here is that a roll down is invisible when it is up — a box
above the opening and nothing else, recessed out of sight if the stucco is being reworked. In the
governed communities east of I-75 that is usually what gets a powered product approved, and on a
front elevation it is what keeps the house looking like a house.

The two profiles we build

ProfileSlatGoes on
FSS 55mmDouble wallWider openings and longer spans. FL22558, including HVHZ.
FSS 63mmSingle wall, wider profileWindows and smaller openings. FL31658.

Both are manufactured in our shop in Cape Coral on a box sized to your opening — twenty
minutes away, which is also why a replacement part is a drive rather than an order. The bigger slat
is not the stronger one; the double wall on the 55mm is where the load capacity comes from.

Where roll downs are not the answer

On the historic stock around McGregor and Dean Park, a housing above a period window is a harder
sell than it is on a modern elevation — Bahama
shutters
usually suit those houses better. And on a long list of rear windows,
accordions protect far more openings for the money.
Roll downs earn their place on sliders, on second-storey openings, and anywhere the elevation has to
stay clean.

City or county?

A lot of Fort Myers addresses fall in unincorporated Lee County rather than the city, and they
are different building departments with different submittals. We work out which applies to yours.
Permitting is handled as part of the job. If you are building, specify the shutters during design
— the backing and the electrical run cost almost nothing while the wall is open.

Questions we get asked

Is motorizing worth it on a two-storey house?

That is the one case where we would push you towards it. An upstairs opening you need a ladder for does not get closed when the weather is already turning, and that is the exact moment the protection is supposed to work.

What if the power is out?

Every motorized system we install has a manual override and you crank it down by hand. The one thing you can rely on in a hurricane is losing power, so nothing depends on the motor.

Do you make them or buy them?

We manufacture both profiles in our shop in Cape Coral, twenty minutes from most of Fort Myers, on a custom box sized to your opening. That is also why odd or oversized openings are not a problem.
