Anything mounted on the outside of a house west of 41 lives in salt air permanently. That is not
a dramatic statement, it is just what the hardware experiences: a constant, mild, year-round attack
on tracks, fasteners, wheels and motors. Salt air is what kills hurricane hardware in this part of
the county, far more often than any storm does.
A roll down shutter answers that better than anything else we
install, because for eleven months of the year the shutter itself is rolled up inside a housing.
The slats are not sitting in the weather. The moving parts are not sitting in the weather. What is
exposed is the box and the tracks, and those are the parts that are straightforward to rinse and
straightforward to service.
Whatever you put on a Bonita house, rinse the tracks with fresh water a few times a year and
clear the sand out. Grit in a track is the most common cause of a system binding, and it costs
nothing to prevent. Best found in June rather than the day before a storm.
Barefoot Beach, Little Hickory and the rebuild question
If you are rebuilding or renovating on the beach side, specify the shutters during design rather
than after. The structural backing and the electrical run cost almost nothing while the wall is open
and a great deal once it is closed and finished. This is the single most common thing people wish
they had done differently.
It also matters on a raised house. A lot of the Gulf-side rebuild is elevated now, which puts
the living level a full storey up and the openings well out of reach from the ground. A shutter you
need a ladder for is a shutter that does not get closed.

We manufacture both in our shop in Cape Coral on a custom box sized to your opening. The bigger
slat is not the stronger one — the double wall on the 55mm is where the load capacity comes
from, and which profile goes on your opening is decided against the approved size and pressure
schedules.
Permitting in Bonita Springs
The City of Bonita Springs runs its own building department, so this is a City submittal rather
than an unincorporated Lee County one. Permitting is handled as part of the job.
