Roll Down Screens in Naples, FL
Naples lanais are bigger than everybody else’s. That is a nice problem until you
try to protect one, at which point it rules out almost every product on the market.
The scale problem
Lot sizes here are larger, ceilings are higher, and the outdoor living space is frequently the
reason the house was bought. Twenty-five and thirty-foot lanai openings are ordinary in Naples,
where they would be unusual on the coast.
At that width most protection stops working. Panels need posts. An accordion becomes a very long
pull with a great many stacked blades. A roll down shutter closes it but also closes it — you
have turned the best room in the house into a box.
A screen covers up to 30 feet wide by 20 feet high in a single span with no centre
post, and you can still see the golf course through it.
What you are actually buying
Fabric on a track in a housing above the opening. Down over the whole span in one piece, sealed
at both edges, retracted out of sight when the weather passes. The two systems we install are the
MagnaTrack Defender and
UltraShield, both Florida product approved and both
tested the same way — a nine-pound 2×4 fired at the product, then thousands of pressure
cycles. If you have heard them called Kevlar screens, that is a
nickname rather than the fabric.
The fabric is rated for year-round use, which in Naples means the screen also earns its keep on
the west-facing lanais that are unusable at five o’clock in April, and against the insects on the
preserve and Estates lots.
Your pool cage is not doing this job
A screen enclosure is not rated opening protection and was never designed to survive a major
hurricane. Naples cages are large, which makes them worse rather than better in this respect —
a big cage coming apart puts a great deal of aluminum into the air a few feet from the sliders
behind it.
What the quote turns on
The span, what the structure will carry, and where the housing sits. A thirty-foot screen puts
real load into whatever it is fixed to, so backing gets verified rather than assumed —
occasionally that is the part to deal with first. On new construction the housing recesses out of
sight, which is only cheap while the structure is open.
Permitting runs through the City of Naples or Collier County depending on the address, and is
handled as part of the job.

Will it spoil the view?
It is up almost all the time. Deployed you are looking through fabric rather than at a wall, and there is no post in the middle, which is the thing that actually ruins a view.
Does my pool cage count as protection?
No. Screen enclosures are not rated opening protection. A large Naples cage failing is a great deal of aluminum moving very close to the glass behind it.
