On a house with original aluminum single-pane windows, impact glass is not only
protection — it is the window replacement you were eventually going to do anyway. That
changes the arithmetic more here than anywhere else we work.
The windows were coming out regardless
A large part of Port Charlotte still has its original glass: aluminum frames, single pane,
sixty years old, drafty, hard to open and long past useful life. If those are coming out at some
point, the labour is already going to be spent.
Doing that job once with impact units is the efficient version of it. You are not paying the
full cost of protection — you are paying the difference between a replacement window and a
rated one, and that is a much smaller number than the one on the quote suggests.
If your windows are not due for replacement, the arithmetic is completely different and
usually points at accordions instead.

Do it in the right order
The mistake we see most often in this town is a partial impact package — four or five
lovely new windows on the front of the house and nine original ones round the back. That is not a
protected house, and it earns nothing on a wind mitigation form, because the form asks whether
every glazed opening is protected.
Cover everything at a lower specification before upgrading anything to a higher one. And the
lanai comes first: no amount of impact glass covers a wide covered opening, which on a canal home is
the largest exposed face on the building. See

Reading the approval
Every impact window sold legally in Florida carries a Florida Product Approval, and it is a
schedule rather than a single figure — sizes, configurations, and the design pressures each is
approved to carry. The same unit in a wider size carries a lower rating. Ask for the approval number
for the exact unit and the approved pressure at your opening size; our

Port Charlotte is unincorporated, so permitting runs through Charlotte County. The inspector
verifies the approval against the installation, which is the step that makes the paperwork worth
something. Permitting is handled as part of the job.

It is at its most sensible when the original windows are due for replacement anyway, which describes a lot of Port Charlotte. You are then paying the difference between a new window and a rated one, not the full cost of protection.
Can I do a few windows now and the rest later?
You can, but understand that a partly protected house gets no wind mitigation credit and is still exposed. If the budget will not stretch, cover everything with accordions first and upgrade later.
