The one product here that people buy because they want it rather than because a
storm is coming. On a west-facing Marco window that is a perfectly good reason.
Afternoon sun off the water
Marco faces west into the Gulf, and the island’s best rooms point that way on purpose. From about
three o’clock that becomes several hours of direct sun and glare coming off open water through the
glass you paid for the view.
A Bahama shutter hinges at the head of the window and props out

Count the moving parts on a Bahama: a hinge and a prop. No motor, no track, no wheels, no fabric.
On an island where everything outside is in salt air permanently, and on a property that sits empty
half the year, that simplicity is worth real money in service calls you never make.
Where they are the wrong answer
A Bahama is a window product covering one opening at one width. A wide lanai wants a
roll down screen. A slider wants a
roll down shutter. A long list of rear windows on a
budget wants accordions, which go considerably
further per dollar.
And in a condominium, check the approved list first — anything permanently visible on a
shared building is an association question before it is a product question.
Rated, or decorative
A great deal of what is sold as a Bahama shutter in Florida is purely decorative and carries no
approval at all. That is a legitimate purchase if shade and appearance are what you want, but it is
not opening protection, it does not count on a wind mitigation form, and a building department will
not treat it as protection. We will tell you which one is in your quote. We supply and install
Bahamas — unlike our accordions and roll downs, these are not built in our shop.
The City of Marco Island permits its own work
Marco incorporated in 1997 and runs its own building department, so this is a city submittal rather than a Collier County one even though the mailing address is Collier. Separate process, separate review times. Permitting is handled as part of the job.

Do they count as hurricane protection?
Only when specified and permitted as a rated unit. A lot of what is sold in Florida is decorative with no approval, and the two look very similar from the street.
