Bahama Shutters in Estero, FL
The one hurricane product an architectural review committee is likely to thank you
for. It is also a window product, not a lanai product — and that distinction decides whether
it belongs on your house.
Why Bahamas fit Estero specifically
Estero’s communities were largely designed around a West Indies and Mediterranean vocabulary
— tile roofs, stucco, shaded openings, colour palettes written into the community documents.
A Bahama shutter hinges at the top and props out over the window at

A Bahama is a window product. It covers one opening, at one width, hinged at the head.

One more thing worth saying plainly: not every Bahama shutter sold in Florida is a rated storm
product. Plenty are decorative only. If the shutter is meant to count as opening protection it has
to be specified and permitted as a rated unit, and we will tell you which one you are buying before
you buy it.
Permitting in the Village of Estero
Estero has run its own building department since 2014, so this is a Village submittal rather
than a Lee County one. Permitting is handled as part of the job. We supply and install Bahama

Do Bahama shutters actually count as hurricane protection?
Only if they are specified and permitted as a rated unit. A lot of Bahama shutters sold in Florida are decorative and carry no approval at all. We will tell you which one you are looking at, because it changes both the price and whether the opening is legally protected.
Will they make the room dark?
They shade the glass rather than block it. Light still comes in around and under the shutter, and on a west-facing Estero window most people find the room more usable in the afternoon, not less. If you want an opening that closes completely, that is a roll down shutter.
Are they a good choice for my lanai?
No. A Bahama covers one window at one width. A wide lanai or pool cage opening is better served by a motorized hurricane screen that covers the whole span in one piece with no post in the middle.
