A Bahama shutter is a louvered panel hinged at the head and
propped out over the window. There is no motor, no track, no wheels and no fabric. On the Gulf side
of Bonita, where salt gets into everything with moving parts, that short list is a genuine
advantage rather than a marketing line.
It is also the shutter that looks like it belongs. Bonita’s beach-side vocabulary — the
cottages on Little Hickory, the older stock along Bonita Beach Road, and the West Indies detailing
in the newer builds — already has Bahamas in it. On a front elevation, that usually means
approval is a formality rather than a negotiation.
What they give you the rest of the year
A Bahama throws permanent shade across the glass it covers. On a west-facing Bonita window
looking at the Gulf, that is the difference between a room you sit in at five o’clock and a room
with the blinds shut.

And the thing nobody says out loud: a lot of Bahama shutters sold in Florida are decorative and
carry no approval at all. If it is meant to count as opening protection it has to be specified and

The City of Bonita Springs has its own building department, so this is a City submittal.
Permitting is handled as part of the job. We supply and install Bahama shutters — unlike our

Are Bahama shutters a good idea this close to the Gulf?
They are one of the better ones, because there is very little on them to corrode — no motor, no track, no wheels. That simplicity is worth real money over years on a beach-side house.
Do they count as hurricane protection?
Only if specified and permitted as a rated unit. Plenty of Bahama shutters sold in Florida are purely decorative and carry no approval. That changes both the price and whether the opening is legally protected, so ask before you buy.
Will they block my Gulf view?
They shade the glass rather than block it, and they are normally specified for west and front elevations rather than the openings you are looking through at the water. If a view window matters, we will put something else on it.
