What Charley left behind
Hurricane Charley went through this town in August 2004 and most of Punta Gorda was rebuilt or
substantially repaired afterwards — under the post-2002 code, which meant rated windows and
doors.
That changes the shutter conversation completely. On a rebuilt house you are not protecting
everything. You are protecting the specific list the code did not cover: the openings added since,
the parts of the house that survived and were never touched, the enclosure that went on in 2011, and
the lanai.
On a short, specific list, accordion shutters are the
straightforward answer. Permanently mounted, closed by hand in a couple of minutes, nothing to
carry or store, and they lock from the inside — which matters in a town with this much
seasonal occupancy.
Where the older stock still is
Not everything was rebuilt. There is original housing around the historic district and along the
older streets near the harbour, and on those houses the openings are frequently non-standard and
occasionally not square. We manufacture our accordions in our own shop, cut to your dimensions, so
that is a fit rather than a compromise.
They carry Florida Product Approval FL1850 and are approved for the High Velocity Hurricane Zone,
a tougher standard than Charlotte County requires.
Permitting in Punta Gorda
The City of Punta Gorda runs its own building department, so this is a city submittal rather than
a Charlotte County one — and if the property sits in the historic district there may be a
further review of anything that changes the street elevation. Permitting is handled as part of the
job.

My house was rebuilt after Charley. Do I still need shutters?
Probably not on the windows, if they are rated and documented. Almost certainly on the lanai, and on anything added since the rebuild. The useful first step is finding out what your wind mitigation form actually says.
Are my windows really rated?
Check for a permanent etched mark in a corner of the glass, then check that a permit exists against the address for that work. Plenty of post-storm work in this town was done properly and some of it was not.
Do you make the shutters yourselves?
Yes, in our shop in Cape Coral, cut to your opening sizes. That matters on the older stock near the harbour where very little is a standard dimension.
