Accordion Shutters on Marco Island, FL
Marco is really two islands. There are the luxury rebuilds, and there is the
original 1960s and 70s Deltona stock that never left — and on the second one, accordions are
still the most sensible money you can spend.
The original canal houses
Deltona platted and built most of Marco between the mid-1960s and the 1970s: single-storey
concrete block on a canal lot, a lot of similar windows, and a lanai at the back. Many of those
houses are still standing exactly as built, and many still have original glass.
On a house like that you are not protecting a short list of exceptions. You are protecting
nearly every opening, and at that scale accordion shutters are
the only rated product that stays affordable. Permanently mounted, closed by hand in a couple of
minutes across the whole house, no ladder and nothing to store.
They also lock from the inside, which on Marco matters more than average — a great many of
these houses are empty for six months of the year.
Made to fit, which the older stock needs
We manufacture accordions in our shop in Cape Coral, cut to your dimensions. Sixty-year-old
Deltona houses have been altered, extended and re-windowed by a lot of different hands, and a
surprising number of openings are neither standard nor square. That is a fit for us rather than a
compromise you look at every day.
Florida Product Approval FL1850, approved for the High Velocity Hurricane Zone — a tougher
standard than Collier County requires. That simply means the product is not marginal for your
address.
Where they will not fly
If you are in a condominium or a governed community, expect the association to have a firm view
on anything permanently visible from outside. Accordions stack against the wall and stay there, so
on a street elevation or a shared building they are frequently the one product that gets refused.
Roll down shutters disappear into a housing and
usually clear approval instead.
On a private canal home, none of that applies and accordions on the windows plus a
screen across the lanai is the specification that
protects the most house per dollar.
The City of Marco Island permits its own work
Marco incorporated in 1997 and runs its own building department, so this is a city submittal rather than a Collier County one even though the mailing address is Collier. Separate process, separate review times. Permitting is handled as part of the job.

Questions we get asked
I have an original Marco house with a lot of windows. What is the cheapest rated option?
Storm panels on paper, accordions in practice. Panels only protect a house if somebody puts them up before the storm, and on a seasonal Marco property that frequently does not happen.
Will my association approve them?
On a private canal home it is rarely an issue. In a condominium or a governed community, often not, because they stay visible year-round. Send us your documents and we will specify to them.
Do you make them yourselves?
Yes, in our Cape Coral shop, cut to your opening sizes. That matters on the Deltona-era stock where very little is a standard dimension any more.
