Decks, balconies and the new elevated houses
The island going back up is a different island architecturally: living levels raised, larger
openings, and covered decks and balconies facing the Gulf or the bay. Those covered outdoor spaces
are wonderful and they are also large, exposed openings on the windward side of the building.
A screen covers up to 30 feet wide by 20 feet high in a single span with no post
in the middle, seals at both edges, and rolls away out of sight afterwards. On a balcony or a deck
that is frequently the only product that works at all — panels need posts and storage, and a
shutter turns the best part of the house into a cupboard.
It is not just for storms

Fixing it to a new structure
A thirty-foot screen puts real load into whatever it is attached to. On new construction that is
easy to design for and the housing can be recessed out of sight while the structure is open —
another reason to make this decision during the build rather than after it. On surviving older
structures the backing gets verified rather than assumed.

Will it work on a covered balcony?
That is one of the best uses for it. A balcony or deck opening is wide and exposed, and a screen spans it in one piece without a post and without closing the space in.
Can I use it when there is no storm?
Yes – the fabric on both systems is rated for year-round use as an insect and solar screen, which on a west-facing Gulf deck is most of why it gets used.
I am still building. Does that help?
Considerably. The housing can be recessed and the backing designed in while the structure is open, which is far cheaper and looks better than a retrofit.
