Decide while the walls are open
Structural backing for a shutter, and the electrical run for a motor, cost almost nothing while
a wall is framed and open. Once it is closed, finished and stuccoed they cost a great deal, and a
recessed housing stops being straightforward altogether.
We are asked to retrofit onto finished new houses on this island constantly, and the honest
answer is nearly always that it should have been decided a year earlier. If you are anywhere in the
design or framing stage right now, this is the cheapest hurricane protection decision you will ever
make.
Elevated living, and reach
Almost everything going back up on Estero Island is elevated, which puts the living level a
storey or more above grade. The openings are then well beyond comfortable reach from the ground, and
that is the argument for motorizing: a shutter needing a ladder is a shutter that does not get
closed.
Every motorized roll down shutter we install has a manual
override, so a power cut is not a problem — you crank it down by hand.
Salt, and what stays outside
Nothing on this island escapes salt. A roll down handles it better than most because the shutter
spends eleven months rolled up inside its housing rather than sitting in the weather; the box and
the tracks are what is exposed, and both rinse easily.
