Storm Panels on Sanibel Island, FL
We install these all over Southwest Florida and we sell fewer on Sanibel than
anywhere. Here is the honest reason, and the case where they still make sense.
Why the island is the hardest place for them
Storm panels are rated, permitted, effective and the cheapest
protection you can legally fit. Their one weakness is that a person has to put them up, and Sanibel
stacks three problems onto that single point:
- Elevated houses. A great deal of the island is a storey up. Panels above the
living level mean a ladder, outdoors, before a storm. - Seasonal and rental occupancy. If nobody is on the island, nobody is fitting
panels, and the causeway is not somewhere you want to be late. - Salt on the hardware. Tracks, studs and wingnuts corrode fast here. The failure
people actually meet is a seized fixing on the afternoon a warning goes up.
Where they still earn their place
On ground-level and secondary structures — a storage room, a pool bath, a workshop, the
under-house enclosure on an elevated home. Nobody needs a motorized shutter on a pump room, and
panels protect those openings for a fraction of anything else.
They are also a reasonable stage one on a rebuild. Every opening gets legally protected now for
the least money, and elevations can be upgraded one at a time later without wasting the work.
Steel or clear
Steel is the default and the strongest per dollar. Clear Lexan
polycarbonate costs more and lets light through. Aluminum exists and is occasionally
painted to match a house, but buys less strength for more money and is rarely specified.
If you already own panels
Test-fit a few every June. If the hardware turns freely you are set for the season. If it has
seized, that is a straightforward fix in June and an impossible one in September — and on this
island it will have seized faster than you expect.
Sanibel permits its own work, strictly
The City of Sanibel runs its own building department and the island is known for holding a tighter line than anywhere else in the county — on what may be attached to a building, on vegetation, and on lighting. Anything fixed to an exterior wall is reviewed properly rather than waved through. We specify to that rather than submitting and hoping. Permitting is handled as part of the job.

Are panels a bad idea on Sanibel?

How fast does the hardware corrode here?
