Impact Windows in Punta Gorda, FL
There is a persistent idea that because so much of this town was rebuilt after
Charley, the glass problem is solved. Go street by street and it plainly is not.
What the rebuild actually covered
Charley in 2004 rebuilt a great deal of Punta Gorda, and a lot of that work did put rated glass
in. But three things were left behind, and between them they cover an enormous number of houses:
- Everything that was repaired rather than rebuilt. A roof and a soffit can be
replaced without a single window being touched. - Everything outside the damage footprint. Charley did not hit the whole city
evenly and neither did the rebuild. - Everything added since. Enclosures, extensions, sliders widened, a window
turned into a door.
Then Ian came through in 2022 and started the cycle again. The upshot is a town where the house
next door may be fully rated and yours may have nothing, and nobody can tell from the street.
Find out what you have before you spend
- Look for the mark. Impact units carry a permanent etched or applied stamp in
a corner of the glass. Nothing there is an answer. - Check for a permit. City of Punta Gorda records are public. No window permit
against the address means no inspection ever verified an approval against that install. - Read your wind mitigation form. It records what an inspector already found. On
a lot of houses here it shows rated windows and still no opening protection credit — because

What we install

Every impact window sold legally in Florida carries a Florida Product Approval, and it is a
schedule rather than a single number — sizes, configurations, and the design pressure each is
approved for. Ask for the approval number for the exact unit and the approved pressure at your

Do the lanai too
Impact glass cannot cover a wide covered opening, and on a Punta Gorda Isles canal home that
lanai is the largest exposed face on the building. It is also why houses with good glass still get
no credit on the wind mitigation form. Roll down
screens close that gap in one span.
The City of Punta Gorda runs its own building department, so this is a city submittal rather
than a Charlotte County one. Permitting is handled as part of the job.

Maybe. Repairs frequently left the original glass in, the damage footprint did not cover the whole city, and anything added since may not be rated. Look for an etched mark in a corner of the glass and check whether a window permit exists against the address.

Do I need shutters as well as impact windows?
On the lanai, almost certainly. Impact glass cannot cover a wide covered opening, and leaving it open is why plenty of houses here get no opening protection credit despite rated windows.
