Port Charlotte is a retrofit market, and on a retrofit the maths is simple: how
many openings can this budget actually cover? Accordions win that question and it is not close.
A whole town built before the code
Most of Port Charlotte was platted and built by General Development Corporation from the late
1950s through the 1980s. Single-storey concrete block, modest footprints, a canal system, and
— the part that matters — original aluminum single-pane windows in a great many of
them.
Those windows are the weak point on the house. They are not rated, they were never rated, and no
amount of good intention makes them so. Which means unlike the newer markets around here, you are
not protecting a short list of exceptions. You are protecting nearly every opening.
At that scale accordion shutters are the only rated product
that stays affordable. Permanently mounted, closed by hand in a couple of minutes across a whole
house, no ladder, nothing to carry, nothing in the garage, and they lock from the inside.

That last row is worth dwelling on. A house with four beautiful impact windows and eleven bare
ones is not a protected house, and it does not tick the opening protection line on a wind mitigation
form either — that form asks about every glazed opening.
Made to fit, which matters on this stock
We manufacture our accordions in our own shop, cut to your dimensions. Sixty-year-old GDC houses
have been altered, added to and re-windowed by a lot of different hands, and a surprising number of
openings are not standard and not square. That is a fit for us rather than a compromise.
FL1850, approved for the High Velocity Hurricane Zone — a tougher standard than Charlotte
County requires. Port Charlotte is unincorporated, so permitting runs through Charlotte County and
is handled as part of the job.

What is the cheapest way to protect the whole house?
Storm panels on paper, accordions in practice. Panels only protect a house if somebody actually puts them up before the storm, and across fifteen openings that is a long afternoon.
Should I do a few impact windows instead?
Not unless you can eventually do all of them. Four rated windows and eleven bare ones is not a protected house and gets no credit on a wind mitigation form. Cover everything at a lower spec before upgrading anything.
My windows are original aluminum. Is that a problem?
It is the reason to act, not a reason it will not work. Accordions mount to the structure around the opening rather than to the window, so an old window is no obstacle to protecting it.
