Bahama Shutters in Punta Gorda, FL

A town built around a harbour, with a historic district and a great deal of
west-facing glass. Bahamas were made for exactly this.

The harbour is west

Charlotte Harbour sits on the west side of Punta Gorda, which means the view and the afternoon
sun arrive through the same glass. From about three o’clock a west-facing harbour room is either
shaded or unusable, and drawing the blind means giving up the reason the window is there.

A Bahama shutter props out over the window at an angle and holds
shade across the glass permanently. You keep the harbour and lose the glare, every day of the year,
without touching anything.

  • Furniture and flooring on that elevation stop fading
  • The room runs cooler through the afternoon
  • Daytime privacy on a window facing the street or the walk

The historic district

Punta Gorda has a designated historic district and a genuine period character that the town
takes seriously. Louvered shutters belong to that vocabulary; an accordion stacked on a wall does
not. If your house is in or near the district, a Bahama is usually the storm product with the
shortest path through review — and on those houses it improves the elevation rather than
apologising to it.

Rated, or just decorative

A great deal of what is sold as a Bahama shutter in Florida is decorative and carries no approval
at all. That is a fine purchase if shade and appearance are what you want, but it is not opening
protection, it does not tick the wind mitigation form, and a building department will not treat it
as protection. We will tell you which one is in the quote.

We supply and install Bahamas — unlike our accordions and roll downs, these are not built
in our shop. Permitting runs through the City of Punta Gorda’s own building department and is
handled as part of the job.

Questions we get asked

Will they suit a house in the historic district?

Better than anything else we sell. Louvered shade devices are part of that period vocabulary, so a Bahama tends to read as original rather than added.

Do they actually stop a hurricane?

When specified and permitted as a rated unit, yes, on the opening they cover. Decorative Bahamas carry no approval and protect nothing, and the two can look very similar.

Can I put them on the lanai?

No. A Bahama covers one window at one width. A lanai is a single wide opening and wants a screen that spans it in one piece.
