Storm Panels in Naples, FL
We sell fewer panels in Naples than anywhere else we work, and that is mostly
correct. There are still two situations where they are exactly the right purchase.
Why Naples buys fewer of them
Storm panels are the cheapest rated protection you can legally fit,
and the reason is that you supply the labour. Somebody has to carry them out, lift them up, bolt
them on, and take them down again afterwards.
Naples has an unusually high proportion of houses where nobody is going to do that. Seasonal
owners who are in Michigan from May. Two and three-storey houses. Owners for whom the labour is not
the constraint but the storage is — a full set of steel for a large house takes a serious
amount of garage.
The two places they still win
- The Estates and the outbuildings. East of 951, on a large lot with a workshop,
a guest house, a pool bath or a garage with windows, panels protect the secondary buildings for a
fraction of what anything else costs. Nobody needs a motorized shutter on a pump house. - Staging a big house. If the plan is to protect a large property properly over
two or three seasons, panels get every opening legally covered now, for the least money, and each
elevation can be upgraded later without wasting what came before.
Steel or clear
Steel is the default and the strongest thing per dollar. Clear Lexan
polycarbonate costs more and lets daylight through, which decides whether the house is a
dark box for three days. Aluminum exists and is occasionally painted to match, but it buys less
strength for more money and is rarely worth specifying.
If any part of the house would be occupied during a storm, price the clear on those rooms.
People underestimate it until they have done it once.
What panels cannot do
They cannot close a lanai. Naples lanais and pool cages are larger than the regional average and
that opening is the largest exposed face on most houses here — it wants a
roll down screen in one span. And a panelled front
elevation leaves tracks and hardware on the wall year-round, which in this market is usually the end
of the conversation.
Permitting runs through the City of Naples or Collier County depending on the address, and is
handled as part of the job.

Are panels beneath a house like mine?
Not on outbuildings, a workshop or a pool bath, where they are simply the sensible answer. On the main elevations of an occupied Naples house they usually fail on labour and storage rather than on quality.
Can I protect a big house in stages?
Yes, and panels are a reasonable stage one. Every opening ends up legally protected for the least money, and elevations can be upgraded one at a time as you go.
Do panels count for insurance the same as shutters?
Rated, permitted panels are opening protection like anything else. The wind mitigation form asks whether every glazed opening is protected, though – so an unprotected lanai undoes the rest of it.
