Roll Down Shutters in Naples, FL

On a house where the elevation was designed rather than assembled, the best
hurricane product is the one you cannot see. That is the entire argument here and it is a strong
one.

Nothing on the wall

A roll down shutter lives in a housing above the opening. Up,
there is a box and nothing else — and on new construction, a renovation or a re-stucco the
box gets recessed into the wall until it is genuinely invisible. Down, it seals the opening
completely.

In Naples that solves two problems at once. It gets past the review committee, and it means the
front of a house that cost real money to design is not carrying visible hardware for the eleven
months there is no storm. Nothing else powered comes close on either count.

Specify it during design, not after

If you are building in Naples, or taking a house down to the block, this is the single most
valuable thing on the page: decide on the shutters while the walls are open.

The structural backing and the electrical run cost almost nothing at that stage and a great deal
afterwards, and a recessed housing is only straightforward before the stucco goes on. We are asked
to retrofit recessed housings regularly and the honest answer is usually that it should have
happened eighteen months earlier.

The two profiles we build

ProfileSlatGoes on
FSS 55mmDouble wallWider openings and longer spans. FL22558, including HVHZ.
FSS 63mmSingle wall, wider profileWindows and smaller openings. FL31658.

Both are manufactured in our Cape Coral shop on a box sized to your opening. The bigger slat is
not the stronger one — the double wall on the 55mm is where the load capacity comes from.

Condominiums

A large share of Naples is high-rise and mid-rise, and on a balcony or a lanai twelve floors up
the association usually has a firm and specific opinion about what may be fitted. Roll downs are
frequently the only thing on the approved list, precisely because they disappear. Bring us the
association documents and we will specify inside them rather than submit something that comes back
rejected.

Permitting runs through the City of Naples or Collier County depending on the address, and is
handled as part of the job.

Questions we get asked

Can the housing be hidden completely?

On new construction or a re-stucco, effectively yes — it recesses into the wall. On a finished house you will see a box above the opening. That difference is the reason to decide during design rather than after.

Will they work on a condo balcony?

Usually, and often they are the only thing the association will approve, because there is nothing visible when they are up. Send us the association documents before anything is ordered.

What happens in a power cut?

Every motorized system we install has a manual override and you crank it down by hand. The motor is a convenience; the protection does not depend on it.
