Old Naples is built out of a British Colonial and West Indies vocabulary that assumes shaded
openings: deep overhangs, louvered vents, tall shuttered windows. A
Bahama shutter is a device from that tradition rather than an
adaptation of it.
Which is why in the communities where every other storm product needs a case made for it, a
Bahama usually does not. Park Shore, Moorings, Coquina Sands, the older cottages downtown —
the committee has generally already approved them somewhere nearby.

Decorative is a legitimate purchase if that is what you want. It is not opening protection, it does
not tick the wind mitigation form, and it will not satisfy a building department. We will tell you
which one you are looking at, because in this market the visual difference between the two is
almost nothing and the price difference is not.

in our shop. Permitting runs through the City of Naples or Collier County depending on your address,
and is handled as part of the job.

Will my association approve Bahama shutters?

Are they real hurricane protection?
Only when specified and permitted as a rated unit. Plenty of what is sold here is decorative with no approval behind it, and the two can look nearly identical. Ask which one is in the quote.
Can I do the whole house in Bahamas?
You can, and some people do. It is rarely the best use of the money — they earn their place on the elevations people see and on west-facing glass, and accordions protect the rest for a fraction of it.
