Accordion Shutters in Naples, FL

In most markets we lead with cost per opening. In Naples that is rarely the
deciding argument, so here is the honest version: accordions belong on the elevations nobody
looks at, and they are unbeatable there.

Where accordions go on a Naples house

Naples buys on appearance more than any market we work in, and an
accordion shutter stacks against the wall beside the opening
and stays there all year. On a street-facing elevation somebody paid an architect to design, that
is a hard sell and we will not pretend otherwise.

Where they are the right answer is everything else. Side elevations between houses. Rear
windows facing a hedge. The service side. And out in the Estates east of 951, where houses have a
great many openings on large lots and protecting all of them with anything else stops making
financial sense at about the fourth window.

The specification we write most often here is exactly that split: accordions on the openings
nobody sees, Bahamas or
roll downs where the street can see, and a
screen across the lanai.

Why ours fit openings that others do not

We manufacture accordions in our shop in Cape Coral, cut to your dimensions rather than
selected from a size chart. Naples has a great deal of custom glass — arched heads, angled
gable windows, transoms above sliders, openings that were designed rather than ordered. A stock
shutter on an opening like that is a compromise you look at every day.

They carry Florida Product Approval FL1850 and are approved for the High Velocity Hurricane
Zone, which is a tougher standard than Collier County requires.

Two building departments

The City of Naples runs its own building department; everything outside the city limits —
including most of the Estates, Golden Gate and the north Naples communities — goes through
Collier County. They are separate submittals with separate review times, and plenty of people with
a Naples address are not in the City of Naples. We establish which applies before anything is
submitted. Permitting is handled as part of the job.

Questions we get asked

Will accordions look wrong on my house?

On a front elevation, possibly — they are visible year-round and that is the trade. On side and rear openings nobody is looking at, they protect more of the house per dollar than anything else, which is why most Naples jobs use them somewhere and not everywhere.

I have a lot of windows in the Estates. Is there a cheaper way?

Accordions are the cheaper way, short of storm panels. Past about a dozen openings the arithmetic stops being close, and a large Estates house with rated protection on every opening is almost always accordions on most of them.

Am I in the City of Naples or Collier County?

A lot of Naples addresses are unincorporated Collier County, and it changes which building department reviews the job. We work it out from your address before anything is submitted.
