Storm Panels in Cape Coral, FL
We talk a lot of people out of panels. In Cape Coral we talk more people into them,
and the reason is the housing stock.
Why panels actually work here
Storm panels have one real weakness: somebody has to put them up. Everything else about them
— rated, permitted, effective, cheap — is fine.
That weakness is fatal on an elevated beach house or a home that sits empty from May to October.
It is much less of a problem in Cape Coral, because the typical house here is single
storey and lived in year round. Every opening is reachable from the ground
with a stepladder, and there is somebody in the house to do it.
So we will say the thing that costs us margin: if that describes you and the budget is tight,
storm panels are the most protection per dollar you can legally buy,
and there is nothing second-rate about a panelled window.
Steel or clear
Two materials do nearly all the work. Steel is the default and the strongest
thing per dollar. Clear Lexan polycarbonate costs more and lets daylight through.
Aluminum exists and is occasionally painted to match a house, but it buys less strength for more
money and is rarely worth specifying.
A mix is normal and it is what we usually write: steel on bedrooms and the side elevation, clear
on the main living space. Three days in a fully dark house with no power is worse than people
expect, and Cape Coral has done that recently enough to remember.
What panels cannot do

That last row is the one that matters. The lanai is the widest opening on most Cape Coral houses
and it faces the canal, and no set of panels closes it. A very common specification here is panels
on the windows and a screen across the lanai — and it protects more house per dollar than
anything else we write.
Keep the hardware honest
Panels themselves are almost impossible to damage. The hardware is not. Tracks, studs, wingnuts
and anchors sit outside all year in salt air, and the failure people actually have is a seized
wingnut on the afternoon a warning goes up.
Test-fit a few every June. If the hardware turns freely you are set for the season. That is a
five-minute job in June and an impossible one in September.
Permitting
Cape Coral has its own building department, so this is a city permit rather than a Lee County
one. Permitting is handled as part of the job.

Are storm panels a cheap compromise?
No. They are rated, permitted opening protection and they count on a wind mitigation form the same as anything else. The only real question is whether they will actually be put up, and on a single-storey Cape Coral house with someone living in it, the answer is usually yes.
Steel or the clear ones?
Steel on bedrooms and side windows, clear Lexan on the rooms you would be sitting in. Steel is stronger per dollar; clear costs more and means the house is not pitch dark for three days.
Can I do the whole house in panels?
The windows and doors, yes. Not the lanai — a wide covered opening is not a panel job. Most Cape Coral houses end up with panels or shutters on the openings and a screen across the lanai.
