Impact Windows in Fort Myers, FL

The only protection that works whether or not you are home, awake, or in the state.
It is also the most expensive way to protect an opening, and on a lot of Fort Myers houses it should
not be the first thing you buy.

What we install

Our impact windows and doors are Eastern Architectural Systems — EAS, a
Florida manufacturer. We are also set up to supply Mr. Glass.

This is the one line where we are the installer rather than the manufacturer. We build our own
accordion shutters and
roll down shutters in Cape Coral. We do not make glass and we are
not going to imply otherwise.

When impact glass is clearly the right buy in Fort Myers

  • The windows are coming out anyway. Huge amounts of Fort Myers stock still has
original or failed units. If you were replacing them regardless, the labour is already being spent
    — doing it once with impact units is the efficient version of that project.
  • You are rebuilding after Ian. Specified during design it is simply part of the
building, and there is no retrofit premium.
  • The house sits empty. Seasonal owners, frequent travellers, anyone who cannot
guarantee being in the state to close something.
  • Closing shutters is not realistic for the people who actually live there.
  • An HOA that will not accept visible exterior hardware. Impact glass is invisible.

The honest case against

Impact glass cannot protect the opening that matters most on a typical Fort Myers house. Your
lanai is not a window. No amount of impact glass covers a twenty-four-foot covered opening, and on
the mid-century stock through Whiskey Creek, the Villas and Iona that lanai is the largest exposed
face on the building.

So we will say the thing a window company will not: if the budget is finite, impact glass is
rarely the first purchase. The order that protects the most house per dollar is usually the
lanai first with a motorized screen, then the windows
and doors with accordion shutters. That has cost us
jobs and it is still the right answer.

The approval number is the only spec that means anything

Every impact window sold legally in Florida carries a Florida Product Approval, and that approval
is a schedule rather than a single figure — configurations, maximum sizes, and the design
pressures each is approved to carry.

Which is why nobody can give you a DP rating for a house over the phone. The same window in a
wider size carries a lower number, and a unit that is fine on a sheltered elevation may not be
approved on an exposed corner of the same building. Ask for the approval number for the exact unit
and the approved pressure at your opening size. More on how to read that on our
impact windows and doors page.

City of Fort Myers or unincorporated Lee County

Many Fort Myers addresses fall in unincorporated Lee County rather than the city, and they are
separate building departments with separate submittals. We establish which one applies to you. The
inspector verifies the approval against what was actually installed, which is the step that makes
the paperwork worth something. Permitting is handled as part of the job.

Questions we get asked

Should I do impact windows or protect the lanai first?

On most Fort Myers houses, the lanai first. It is the largest unprotected opening on the building and impact glass cannot cover it. Windows are the second move, and accordion shutters protect far more of them per dollar than impact units do.

Whose impact windows do you install?

Eastern Architectural Systems – EAS, a Florida manufacturer. We are also set up to supply Mr. Glass. Impact glass is the one product line where we are the installer rather than the manufacturer.

Will impact windows lower my insurance?

Opening protection is a line on the wind mitigation form, and impact glass and rated shutters generally tick the same line. Whether it moves your premium depends on your carrier and the rest of your construction – ask your agent what the credit is worth before you buy, not after.
