Storm Panels in Estero, FL
The cheapest rated protection you can legally put on an opening. Everything they
save you in money, they ask back in labour — and in Estero specifically, that trade is worth
thinking about harder than most people do.
What they are
Storm panels are corrugated sheets that bolt to tracks or studs
around the opening before a storm and come off afterwards. Nearly always steel, or clear Lexan
polycarbonate if you want daylight through them. Aluminum panels exist and are occasionally painted
to match a house, but they cost more for less strength than steel, so they are rarely specified.
Rated, permitted, and genuinely effective. Nobody should feel bad about panels — a panelled
window is protected and a bare window is not, and that is the comparison that actually matters.
The Estero problem with panels
A large share of Estero is seasonally owned. People leave in April or May and come back in
October or November, which puts the entire hurricane season inside the months the house is empty.
Panels do not work well against that calendar. There are only two things you can do with a
seasonal house and a set of panels, and neither is good:
- Leave them off. The house is unprotected for the whole season, and if a storm
forms while you are in Michigan, somebody else has to put them up or nobody does. - Put them up in April. The house is now a dark box for six months, which is
hard on the property and worse if you were hoping to rent it or show it.
If you are here year-round and you do not mind the work, panels are excellent value. If the house
sits empty from May to October, a product that closes itself —
roll down shutters or
accordions a neighbour can close in ten minutes —
solves a problem panels cannot.

A reasonable middle path, and one we specify a lot: panels on the side and rear windows nobody
uses, and something that closes quickly on the openings you actually care about.
Permitting in the Village of Estero
Estero has its own building department, so panels are permitted through the Village rather than
through Lee County. Permitting is handled as part of the job.
