Nautilus Rolling Shutters
A rolling shutter and a retractable insect screen out of one 7-inch box. Nobody else does this as cleanly.
Most rolling shutters make you choose. You can have the storm shutter, or you can have the insect screen, and if you want both you are looking at two systems, two boxes and two headers above the same opening. The Nautilus does not work that way.
One 7″ × 13″ box holds both. A full rolling hurricane shutter and a retractable insect screen, in a single housing above the opening. It is the nicest combination unit in the industry, and on a lanai you actually use, it is the difference between a product you deploy once a year and one you use every evening.
The box is the point
A 7-inch box fits almost every residential opening we see in Southwest Florida. That matters more than it sounds. On a lot of homes the header space above the slider is limited, the soffit is close, and a bigger housing either does not fit or has to hang below the opening where you look at it forever.
Seven inches goes in cleanly. And because that one box carries both systems, you are not stacking a second housing next to it to get the insect screen.
What you get from each half
The rolling shutter
A solid barrier that closes the opening completely. Storm protection, full blackout, a real reduction in outside noise, and a physical security benefit when the house is empty for the season. Florida product approvals FL42299 and FL42300.
The insect screen
Retracts fully out of sight when you are not using it, so you are not looking through mesh on a clear February afternoon. Down in the evening, up the rest of the time.
Where it fits best
- The lanai you actually live on. If the opening is used daily, a combination unit earns its keep every week rather than once a season.
- Seasonal homes. Close it up completely when you leave, and you have insect control the rest of the year without a permanent cage.
- Tight headers. Where a larger housing simply will not fit above the opening.
- Bedrooms and guest suites. The blackout and the sound reduction are the reason a lot of people buy these and treat the storm rating as the bonus.
Nautilus, or one of the shutters we build?
We also manufacture our own 55mm and 63mm rolling shutters, and on a lot of openings those are the better answer — particularly anything unusual, because we make the box and can build to the opening.
The Nautilus wins when you want the shutter and the insect screen together out of one housing. That is a genuinely different product, and it is the reason it is on this list.

Will the box fit my opening?
A 7 inch box fits almost every residential opening we see in Southwest Florida, including homes with limited header space above the slider where a larger housing would have to hang below the opening.
Is it rated for hurricanes?
Yes. It carries Florida product approvals FL42299 and FL42300. As with any hurricane protection, the installation is permitted and the inspector verifies the approval number against what is on the wall.
Can I use the insect screen without the shutter?
Yes, that is the point of the combination unit. The insect screen operates independently and retracts fully out of sight when you are not using it.
Should I get a Nautilus or one of the shutters you build?
If you want the shutter and insect screen from one housing, the Nautilus. If the opening is unusual or you want a custom box, our own 55mm or 63mm is usually the better fit. We decide it at the consultation.
